With The Expendables 2, Sparkle and ParaNorman all new and in wide release, holdovers like The Bourne Legacy and The Campaign are finding some competition, and it’s pretty easy to tell what will take Bourne‘s #1 spot. The Expendables 2, which appeals to the same action-loving crowd, made $10.5 million on Friday, and with an A – CinemaScore to get it through the weekend, it will take the #1 spot handily with $30 million.Bourne will nab second place, but with a distant $16.8 million.
The Expendables 2 isn’t the only new movie to go over will with moviegoers either– according to Deadline Sparkle, the musical drama featuring Whitney Houston, boasts an impressive A CinemaScore, while the stop-motion animated ParaNorman gets a B+. Sparkle is coming in just behindBourne Legacy with $4.5 million on Friday and an estimated $14 million weekend, and ParaNorman is virtually tied for Friday box office, but is estimated for fourth place with a $13.4 million haul.
That’s a pretty impressive bunch for what’s often the dog days of summer movie season, and it’s good to see moviegoers actually liking what’s put out there for them.
